This book of Minangkabau pantun provides both the transcription of standard Minangkabau dialect and the transcription of standard Indonesian/Malay language. The pantun has traditionally been used as an educational tool in the villages as well as for many occasions. In this van Ophuijsen compilation, we find various forms of verse, comprising 2 to 20 and 22 lines to pantun containing interwoven quatrains. The Minangkabau pantun, collected from all over the region, is testament to its extensive collection. The form comprises selected discourses on feelings, thoughts, art and even the identity of the Minangkabau people. It is hoped that this book will contribute to the preservation of Minangkabau heritage in the context of pantun from the Malay archipelago. These pantun serve as the custodian of Minangkabau heritage, classified in this book according to the various compartments of life. This book contains 912 stanzas and is a treasure trove of poetic form from West Sumatra. It provides specific description, a background study, and aesthetics of Minangkabau pantun covering the history, nature and social background, form, function, aesthetics and authorship.
