Pelacur Imigran Cina di Pulau Pinang

ebook

The pressure of life in China was the turning point for Chinese women to migrate to Penang. They were smuggled into and sold off in Malaya. Tragically, some of them became entangled in prostitution. The Chinese society and the colonial government accepted the occurrence of prostitution at the early stages of the development of Penang for the sake of the economy. This perception then changed due to the pressure from intellectuals following the development of women's education and the rise of feminism in China. The involvement of the triads and the spread of infectious diseases arising from prostitution made the Chinese society in Penang look askance at Chinese immigrant prostitutes from 1880 until 1941. This book also details the resistance, conflicts and barriers encountered by this group in order to survive in Penang.
