Our Objective is simple and clear - to promote hunting in Africa. And everything we do, focuses on this central mission. We believe that for the passionate hunters they are either hunting, or spend their time wishing they were hunting. This publication helps them get through that time when they are not actually in the bush. Our reader is more committed, more passionate and has tremendous interest in just about everything to do with the African Safari. From cover to cover the AHG brings you everything you need to know about hunting the great continent of Africa. From the southern tip of Africa to the northern reaches of Ethiopia, we go about pursuing our simple and unambiguous objective.

Madikwe Game Reserve —Elephants all the way down • A drought in 2023/2024 saw elephants in Madikwe run out of food. At least 80 of them, and many other animals, died of starvation as the introduced population far exceeded the carrying capacity of the reserve. The public controversy exposed the tip of a looming crisis for elephant management in fenced protected areas in southern Africa. Inept government employees, politicians and animal rights activists make it very difficult for wildlife managers to implement sound elephant policies.
Hunting Elephant and Buffalo in Namibia’s thick Jesse Bush of the KWANDO and BWABWATA A Guide’s Guide • After 12 hours of driving, I found myself on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, just outside the town of Katima in Namibia’s famous Caprivi strip. It was late November, and the heat in the Caprivi was unbearable, with temperatures reaching mid-40s accompanied by isolated thunderstorms to the northeast. It had been a long and dry year across Southern Africa, with water levels at all-time lows in some areas. I was busy gearing up for my last hunt of the season with my good friend Peter and brother John Mayall, as we set out on a quest for elephant and buffalo. Peter, a fellow international professional hunter from Australia, and I had been talking about this hunt for quite some time and finally managed to pull it off.

Since my first Africa hunting safari in 2014, I’ve had a curiosity and yearning to visit Namibia and do some hunting. Little did I know when and how the opportunity might arise, and certainly what brought me here was unexpected.
SELOUS Soldiers • What hunting heart that burns with passion has not wished for an opportunity for a safari to the Selous district of Tanzania? Along with the Serengeti and Kenya, before that country banned hunting in all forms, the Selous was probably the most iconic hunting destination on the planet.
The SNOW BUFF • Struggling to get a deep breath in the high-altitude, cold mountain air, we tried to quietly slip up and over the back of the mountain. Our plan was to stalk and intercept the lone buffalo bull we had spotted more than an hour before.
THE MAGNETIC Draw of Africa • I was recently in a large classroom, and the question was asked how many people had been to Disney World. About 80% of the audience raised their hands. The second question asked was how many people had been back to Disney World, and almost the same number of folks raised their hands yet again. The upshot was, Disney keeps their guests coming back time and time again. I don't think that there's any question that Africa has the same pull for hunters as Disney World has for other folks. If you talk to someone who's been to Africa, chances are they have been many times and plan on going back again and...
